The website is dedicated to the project „Portraying Countryside in Central European Literature“ supported by Visegrad Fund (www.visegradfund.orgwww.visegrad.fund, fb: https://www.facebook.com/visegradfund) and led by the University of Ostrava (Faculty of Arts) in cooperation with the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Institute of Slovak Literature, http://www.uslit.sav.sk) and Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest (Faculty of Humanities, https://szlav.elte.hu.

The scientific objective of the project is to research rural images in Central European literature. We wish to follow the depiction of space, but we also ask questions about the importance of the theme for individual national literatures in various periods, including the present. How did literature capture the countryside and how does it reflect the transformations of the countryside in the modern world? Is the situation in Central Europe somehow significant? What will the comparison of rural concepts in the Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and other environment disclose?

The so-called spatial studies have been developed at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava for a long time. Since 2010 we have been organizing spatial symposia and subsequently, we have published representative publications (3 up to now: Town, Landscape and Nature vs. Industrial), in which researchers from the Czech Republic and on a smaller scale from abroad participated (see https://ff.osu.cz/kcl/12510/prostorova-sympozia).

Now we will develop this in the forthcoming symposium on the theme of rural areas more internationally to come to a comparison that has not yet been made. An important practical goal of the project is therefore to establish closer cooperation with research institutions in the V4 countries in an active way, but also to engage postgraduate students in these activities (a workshop for students will be held in Bratislava in May 2020). Selected PhD students will subsequently participate at the scientific symposium which will take place in Budapest in September 2020. The main participants of the symposium will be invited researchers from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland etc. Their contributions will be elaborated as chapters of the upcoming book entitled „Countryside: Representation of rural space in literature“. So, the students will have the opportunity to present their work to foreign colleagues and be inspired by their (possibly different) approaches.

Symposium “Portraying Countryside in Central European Literatures”

17 – 18 September 2020

The symposium venue: Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyet (Eötvös Loránd University, ELTE), Múzeum Körút 4/A. 1088, Budapest, Building A, Dean's Hall

Languages: Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish, English (for papers in Hungarian and Polish, it is necessary to provide a summary in one of the other languages)

Literary depiction of the countryside has long been marginalised by scholars but is now making its slow comeback as a topic of literary-scientific reflections. The symposium builds on contemporary research into representations of space in literature and art but seeks to deepen it by concentrating on the region of Central Europe, as well as covering a more diverse range of topics. We are interested in literary depictions / representations of villages (or small towns), rural environment and countryside, and their transformations, as well as depictions of agricultural work, peasants and farmers. We welcome papers on typical literary genres peculiar to a specific period which are associated with rural themes, as well as papers on literary mythization and ideologization of rural areas (including nationalist and socialist manipulation). Also reading for peasants and literature specifically addressed to the wider rural population presents a distinctive set of questions, especially in terms of older literature (the early modern period and the 19th century). We expect papers on Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish or Austrian literature covering a rather long time span (from the early modern period to the present). The papers should not be detailed analyses focused on one work or author, but rather more comprehensive contributions that will cover more general tendencies of a certain period in a given national literature, or compare a rather wide range of literary material.

The symposium's papers will be published in a representative publication by the University of Ostrava in 2021

Presenters will be selected by the organizers based on submitted proposals.

The proposals (including the author, their institution, a title of the paper and an outline of maximum 1 standard page) should be sent to the following e-mail addresses by 10th May:

Jakub Ivánek, University of Ostrava (jakub.ivanek@osu.cz)

Dana Hučková, Institute of Slovak Literature, Slovak Academy of Sciences (Dana.Huckova@savba.sk)

Robert Kiss Szeman, Eötvös Loránd University (kiss.szeman.robert@gmail.com)

The symposium will be held with the financial support of the International Visegrad Fund

Sympozium „Obrazy venkova v literaturách střední Evropy“

Termín konání sympozia: 17.–18. září 2020

Místo konání sympozia: Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem (Eötvös Loránd University, ELTE), Múzeum körút 4/A. 1088, Budapešť, budova A, chodba děkanátu

Jednací jazyky: čeština, slovenština, maďarština, polština, angličtina (v případě příspěvku v maďarštině a polštině nutno zajistit teze přednášky v některém z ostatních jednacích jazyků)

Charakter sympozia:

Uvítáme referáty o typických, dobově příznačných literárních žánrech spojených s venkovskou tematikou, stejně jako příspěvky k literární mytizaci a ideologizaci venkova (včetně nacionální a socialistické manipulace). Specifický soubor otázek, zejména na poli starší literatury (raný novověk, 19. století), zahrnuje rovněž četba venkovanů a literatura cíleně adresovaná širším venkovským vrstvám. Očekáváme příspěvky k české, slovenské, maďarské, polské, popř. rakouské literatuře, a to v širokém časovém rozpětí (raný novověk až současnost).

Huckova@savba.sk)

Róbert Kiss Szemán, Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem (kiss.szeman.robert@gmail.com)
